What are dry eyes?
Dry eyes cover a range of disorders in which the quality, quantity or distribution of the tears is disturbed. This causes disorders on the ocular. The good condition of the tears film depends on the proper functioning of the eyelids. According to the studies, 5 – 14% of the population suffers of dry eyes. Dry eyes are more common in older age and especially in women. It is a chronic disease.
What are the symptoms of dry eyes?
Dry eyes can express themselves by itching, burning and tired eyes. The symptoms increase during the day. Sometimes the irritation leads to an excess of tears. But these are not of good quality. Eventually there may be pain, photophobia and even vision loss. Dry eyes have a negative impact on quality of life.
What are the causes of dry eyes?
Decreased production of tears may be due to:
- Hormonal changes, for example menopause, menstruation and pregnancy.
- Autoimmune diseases such as the Sjorensyndrome.
- Updating of certain drugs such as antihistamines, birth control pills, neuroleptics, antidepressants, preservatives in eye drops and acne treatment.
- Inflammation of the eyes, for example with allergy.
- After refractive surgery or laser dry eyes may occur temporarily.
- Abnormalities in the lachrymal gland, often associated with age.
- Shortage of quality omega 6 in the diet.
An excessive evaporation of tears can be caused by:
- Blepharitis (inflammations of the eyelids).
- Not enough or poor blinking movements. This is commonly when working in front of a display.
- Environmental factors such as smoke and air-conditioning.
- Prolonged wearing of contact lenses.
- Preservatives in eye drops.
- Shortage of omega 3 in the diet.
